There’s something truly refreshing about stepping away from the hustle and immersing yourself in nature, especially when it means getting a behind-the-scenes look at the coastal ecosystem that produces some of our favorite seafood, which is exactly what we experienced on a Capers Island Wildlife Exploration with Barrier Island EcoTours

As soon as we set foot on the boat, we were greeted by Barrier Island EcoTours Naturalist Nike, and her “safety paw-ficer,” Shepherd. After grabbing cold refreshments and settling into our comfortable seats, we set off, navigating the open waters toward Capers Island.

Along the way, we spotted dolphins, sharks and birds and learned about the importance of barrier islands and the rich ecosystem of the Lowcountry waters. Once we arrived at Capers Island, we had the chance to explore on our own, where we found pretty shells, snapped photos and marveled at the striking Boneyard Beach.

No Tastemakers meetup would be complete without a delicious meal, and Barrier Island EcoTours delivered with a Lowcountry Boil of perfectly seasoned shrimp, corn, sausage and potatoes, all enjoyed on the sand as the sun set. To top it off, Nike surprised us with a local key lime pie that had everyone going back for seconds. The combination of fresh seafood, good company and the gentle sound of the waves made for an unforgettable end to a great day.

What sets Barrier Island EcoTours apart is how interactive and educational the experience is. Guests are encouraged to explore, touch and fully engage with their surroundings. By the end of the tour, we didn’t just see wildlife, we understood it, and left with a deeper appreciation for the delicate balance of life along South Carolina’s coast.

To contribute to Barrier Island EcoTours’ mission of promoting awareness, conservation and enjoyment of the Lowcountry’s coastal ecosystem, they are donating $1 from every Capers Island Wildlife Exploration to Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network to support their local marine preservation efforts.
