Stems & Skins

A true cornerstone of the Park Circle neighborhood since its opening in 2016, Stems & Skins has earned both local loyalty and national acclaim, recognized as a James Beard Foundation semifinalist for “Outstanding Wine Program” and named one of Food & Wine Magazine’s “Most Important Natural Wine Bars in America.” Inside, the cozy, dimly lit space feels effortlessly inviting – part European wine bar, part neighborhood hangout.
The friendly team guided us through their extensive wine list, helping us discover a few standout bottles, including the crowd-favorite Maison Foucher Crémant de Loire, a crisp and refreshing sparkling wine that paired beautifully with everything on the table. We couldn’t resist sampling a few cocktails, too, including the Whoopsy Spritz, with honeysuckle vodka, Lillet rosé and grapefruit, the Texas Sun, with blanco tequila, mezcal, pickle juice and lime and a classic Espresso Martini, made with vodka, coffee liqueur and Angostura amaro.
While Stems & Skins may be best known for its natural wine program, the food also held its own. We kicked things off with the Whipped Ricotta, topped with garlic-fermented honey and lemon zest and served with warm crostini. The Mushroom Toast with king trumpets, shiitakes, crème fraîche and tarragon was rich and earthy, while the Grilled Cheese, with melty provolone and gruyere, was pure comfort alongside cornichons and a bright arugula salad. Other highlights included the Classic Caesar, Trout Roe with crème fraîche and kettle chips, Marinated Olives and Tinned Scallops with baguette and butter. Each dish was thoughtful, shareable, and full of flavor.
Through May 15, Stems & Skins is donating $1 from every Whipped Ricotta order to WREN, Women’s Rights & Empowerment Network, a statewide organization dedicated to advocating for women’s and girls’ economic rights and bodily autonomy across South Carolina.
