Herd Provisions

As its name implies, Herd Provisions brings people together. A staple in the Wagener Terrace neighborhood and Charleston’s first farm-to-table restaurant with a butcher shop, we knew we were in for a treat when we were welcomed for dinner!
The cozy, rustic atmosphere strikes the perfect balance between elevated and approachable, with warm wood accents, soft lighting and an open kitchen. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to linger over a cocktail (or two) from their impressively inventive menu.
We kicked off the evening with a spread of Herd favorites: Tallow Fat Fries, which were surprisingly flavorful, perfectly golden and served with a side of housemade rosemary aioli, plus the upgraded Duck Confit Poutine version topped with cheddar cheese curds, massaman curry and parsley. The Whipped Ricotta with sautèed bitter greens, kosho, local honey and crispy shallots, and Panko Fried Mozzarella on top of local squash, apple mostarda and arugula, were fresh and served as the perfect balance for the richer sides.
For entrées, we were impressed by the versatility of the menu, from Soy-Marinated Duck, perfectly seared breast with a crispy skin, confit duck leg hash and a maple umami sauce, to the Farmhouse Burger, made with 100% grass-fed beef from their own Virginia farm, cheddar cheese, lettuce and housemade aioli.
The sides were also not to be slept on, including the Shells & Cheese, with a three-cheese sauce and toasted breadcrumbs, grilled Shishito Peppers and the Kale Caesar, featuring kale, pecorino, housemade dressing, white anchovy and breadcrumbs, converted even the salad skeptics at the table.
One of the most memorable parts of the evening, aside from the food, was the mission behind it. Herd Provisions is donating $1 from each Farmhouse Burger sold to Young Moms Together, helping to provide housing, healthcare, education and more to young mothers across South Carolina.
