A summer evening on Kwei Fei’s patio simply can’t be beat. Add in good company and supporting a great cause, and you’ve got the recipe for the best weeknight meal in the Lowcountry! Self-described as loud, hot, and ready to party, Kwei Fei is all about Sichuan spice and bringing Western Chinese classics to Charleston’s bustling food scene.
We kicked off the evening with a round of Double Ninth Moons, made with chrysanthemum-infused tequila, cucumber juice, cardamom and lemon juice. Throughout June, Kwei Fei will be donating $1 from each Double Ninth Moon sold to AFFA in support of their mission during Pride Month.
For appetizers, we enjoyed Marinated Cucumbers with hot bean paste, garlic and sesame alongside two dumpling dishes, the Crescent Dumplings, filled with pork and topped with chili oil, and the Veggie Dumplings, stuffed with mushroom, eggplant and cabbage and topped with cilantro.
Kwei Fei then treated us to a sampling of their most popular menu items: the Cumin Lamb Noodle with wok-crisped cumin-spiced lamb and hand-pulled noodles, the La Zi Ji, crispy chicken thighs served with Tianjin chilies and Sichuan peppercorns, and the Sichuan Beef, sliced flank steak in a fermented chili broth with toasted garlic and ginger. These spicy and indulgent entrees were served alongside the restaurant’s classic sides, including Dry Fried Green Beans, Stir Fried Cabbage With Chilies and Steamed Jasmine Rice.
Though we were stuffed by the last bites of our entrees, the Kwei Fei team sent out one final treat to help us end the meal on a sweet note – and to quell the heat that grew with each bite of Sichuan spice! We savored the YuenYeung Ice Cream, a house-made Hong Kong coffee milk tea flavored dessert that was the ultimate way to end this spicy – and delicious – meal!
Kwei Fei is located at 1977 Maybank Hwy, Charleston, SC 29412.
